BACKGROUND

Higher education places considerable emphasis on developing sustainability competence in Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) to accelerate the progress of achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Although research on mapping sustainability within tertiary curricula raises students' sustainability awareness, it is still challenging for students to adopt a systematic perspective in the problem-solving process for sustainable solutions. Integrating interdisciplinary knowledge and SDGs into ESD is key to developing sustainability competence in teaching and learning activities.

SOLUTION & DESIGN

In an effort to support students applying interdisciplinary knowledge to deal with complex sustainability issues, we build a knowledge graph which contains entities and relations about the knowledge of interdisciplinary knowledge, sustainability solutions and SDGs. We instantiate the knowledge graph and develop a tool–Sustain-KG, helping students tackle sustainability issues relevant to SDGs in the curriculum.

To be more specific, Sustain-KG is a online knowledge graph tool that helps students make effective use of structured knowledge to deal with sustainability problems. With this tool, students are able to gain well-structured knowledge in sustainability problem-solving process.
